GLOSSARY
Active surveillance:
no cancer treatment is provided but the cancer is closely monitored for any changes until there is evidence that it is progressing.
Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT):
hormone therapy for prostate cancer.
Biopsy:
a procedure to remove samples of suspicious tissue from the prostate.
Cancer:
the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body.
Gleason score:
a scoring system to grade prostate cancer.
Metastasis:
the process by which cancer cells spread to other parts of the body and begin growing there.
Metastatic:
cancer cells that have features like that of the primary cancer and not like the cells in the place where they are found.
Prostate cancer:
occurs in the prostate and is one of the most common types of cancer in men.
Prostate gland:
makes some of the fluid that is part of semen.
Prostate-specific antigen (PSA):
a protein made by the prostate that increases if prostate cancer cells are present and can be used to detect potential problems in the prostate gland.
Prostatectomy:
the surgical removal of the prostate gland.
Radiation therapy:
(also known as radiotherapy) uses beams of energy to destroy cancer cells.
Testosterone:
a male sex hormone.
